FAQs & Microcement Education

Where did Micro Cement come from?

Microcement originated in Europe, with its modern form becoming popular in Spain during the late 20th century. Spanish manufacturers and artisans developed advanced cement-based decorative coatings that could be applied in very thin layers over existing surfaces like tiles, concrete, plaster, and timber without needing demolition.

Why is Micro Cement the best option for wet rooms/showers?

Microcement is the best choice for wet rooms and shower areas because it creates a seamless, waterproof surface with no grout lines where mould, moisture and dirt can build up. Its smooth finish makes cleaning and maintenance much easier compared to traditional tiles, while its strong adhesion allows it to be applied over existing surfaces without major demolition. Microcement is also highly durable, slip-resistant when finished correctly, and gives wet rooms a modern, luxurious appearance with a continuous flow across floors and walls.

What can you install Micro Cement over?

Microcement can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, making it one of the most versatile decorative finishes available in the world. It can be installed over existing tiles, concrete, plasterboard, cement sheeting, render, screed, timber, MDF, brick, and even some properly prepared laminate surfaces. Because it is applied in very thin layers, microcement is ideal for renovations where you want to update floors, walls, bathrooms, benchtops, staircases, pools, and outdoor areas without removing the original surface. Proper preparation and priming are essential to ensure long-lasting adhesion and durability.

Is Microcement Waterproof?

Microcement itself is water-resistant, and when installed with the correct waterproofing system and high-performance sealers, it is suitable for wet areas such as showers, bathrooms and splashbacks. Proper substrate preparation and installation are essential for long-term performance.

How do I clean my Micro Cement?

Microcement is very easy to maintain and can usually be cleaned with warm water and a mild pH-neutral cleaner. For everyday cleaning, use a soft mop or microfiber cloth to remove dust and dirt without damaging the protective sealer. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, abrasive scrubbers, or acidic cleaners, as these can wear down the finish over time. In wet areas, regularly wiping away excess water and soap residue will help keep the surface looking fresh and maintain the durability of the protective coating.

If my shower tiles are lose and leaking through to the wall behind, can you Micro Cement right over the top?

Microcement relies on a sound, stable substrate. If the tiles are moving, the movement can transfer through the microcement and cause cracking, delamination, or failure of the sealer..

if water is already reaching the wall behind, applying microcement over the exsisting surface (tiles) won't fix the moisture that's already there. It may stop the water penetration but it won't repair a failed membrane or damaged substrate.

How Much Does Microcement Cost?

The cost of microcement varies depending on the size of the area, the condition of the existing surface, and the complexity of the project.

it can be a very low cost-effective alternative to removing and replacing old tiles, work tops and many other surfaces.

Can Microcement Be Applied Over Existing Tiles?

Yes. In many cases, microcement can be applied directly over existing tiles, avoiding the need for costly demolition. The tiles must be firmly bonded and the substrate must be stable and free from moisture issues before installation.
